First, your dentist examines the tooth and discusses symptoms such as food trapping, sensitivity, pain or a broken edge. The assessment establishes whether a filling is suitable or whether the tooth needs a different treatment.

For cavity treatment, decayed tissue is removed and the remaining space restored. A badly broken-down tooth may need a crown rather than a filling alone. Infection inside the tooth may require root canal treatment before the final restoration.

For a suitable composite restoration, a shade is selected, the tooth is prepared and kept dry, and the material is placed and hardened with a curing light. It is then shaped, checked against your bite and polished. Discuss local anaesthetic when needed; neither cosmetic work nor cavity treatment should come with a blanket promise of being pain-free.

The benefit is a repair planned around both the tooth and its use. For a visible front tooth, appearance matters. For a chewing tooth, the size and position of the restoration also influence which material or treatment is suitable.

Follow the eating and cleaning advice you receive. Continue brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth; a filling does not prevent decay elsewhere. Avoid using restored teeth to bite hard objects or open packaging, particularly after cosmetic bonding.

If the tooth feels too high when you bite, or discomfort persists or worsens, contact the clinic for review. Do not assume an uncomfortable filling simply needs to be tolerated.
The composite shade is selected to blend with surrounding teeth. An exact invisible match is not guaranteed, particularly when the original tooth has marked colour differences.
Sometimes a filling is sufficient, but not for every damaged tooth. The amount and condition of remaining tooth structure help determine whether a crown is more appropriate.
Fillings do not last forever. Their condition needs checking over time, and repair or replacement may eventually be needed. Avoid choosing treatment based on a promised fixed lifespan.
