Understand your jaw

What are the TMJs?

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. Tap a symptom to see where it relates to on the diagram.

Watch the jaw open and close. The glowing point is the joint it swings from.
  • 1
SkullThe bone of the head that the lower jaw connects to.
  • 2
Lower jawThe part that moves when you open, close and chew.
  • 3
TMJWhere the lower jaw meets the skull, just in front of the ear. You have one on each side.
  • 4
Chewing musclesThe muscles around the jaw that work as you eat.

  • 5
Joint socketA hollow in the skull that the jaw's rounded end sits against.
  • 6
DiscA small pad between the two bone surfaces.
  • 7

Know the difference

Know the difference Jaw clicking, pain or restricted movement? Know the difference.

01

Joint sound

A sound when you open or chew

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. Clicking without pain or restricted movement is common and often does not need treatment. When the sound comes with discomfort or catching, an assessment can help establish what is happening.

Common on its own — assess if painful or catching

02

Pain

Pain around the jaw or chewing muscles

Tell us whether it hurts while eating, after waking or throughout the day. Jaw pain can have several causes; it should not automatically be labelled a TMJ disorder. The location, timing and triggers help guide the assessment.

Worth an assessment

03

Movement

Difficulty opening, closing or moving your jaw

A jaw that repeatedly locks, feels stiff or limits eating needs attention. If you cannot eat or drink, seek urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Needs attention

Jaw pain with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating needs emergency care.

Do not wait for a dental appointment.

Your consultation

What can your TMJ assessment and care involve?

Your consultation starts with your experience — not with a procedure.

01

It starts with your experience

When the problem began, whether your jaw locks, previous treatment and how eating or opening your mouth has changed.

02

An examination

Can include checking movement, joint sounds and tenderness.

03

Imaging, only when useful

Imaging may be recommended when clinically useful; it is not automatically required for everyone.

Not automatic

Care options

Care that follows your findings

Jaw pain management

Depending on the findings, initial care may include advice on reducing clenching or repeated jaw strain, appropriate short-term changes to eating habits, and pain-relief options selected for your health history.

Reducing clenching or jaw strain

Short-term eating changes

Pain relief for your health history

The goal is to support daily function, not simply silence a symptom.

Help with movement difficulties

Your clinician can explain whether guided exercises, physiotherapy referral or further assessment is appropriate. Follow advice specific to your condition rather than forcing a painful jaw through exercises found online.

Selected cases only

TMJ splints, when appropriate

An appliance may be discussed for selected cases, but it is not a standard purchase for everyone with jaw clicking. Evidence for relief of TMJ-related pain is limited, and it should not be designed to permanently change your bite.

Follow-up

Follow-up gives you a chance to discuss what has changed: whether meals are easier, discomfort is less frequent or movement remains limited. Ask when to return and which symptoms should prompt earlier contact.

TMJ treatment in Dhaka should come with an understandable plan, not a promise of an instant cure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Will I need surgery?

Not automatically. Conservative approaches are generally considered before invasive procedures. A surgical opinion is relevant only when the findings and response to earlier care justify it.

2

How much does TMJ disorder management in Wari cost?

The total depends on the assessment and any recommended care. Ask separately about consultation, investigations, an appliance if proposed, and follow-up before making a decision.

3

What should I bring?

Bring previous dental reports, details of any mouthguard or splint, and a list of medicines. Note when symptoms occur and what makes them better or worse.
